How To Upgrade From WordPress 2.6 And Below To 2.8 And Above

If you’re using a version of WordPress prior to 2.7 you will need to follow quite a different workflow.

Checkout the following video / article for you that explains the entire process step by step, you can read about it and watch it by following the link below:

How To Upgrade Your WordPress Install

If you’re using WordPress 2.7 on up, then your life just got a WHOLE lot simpler.

How To Upgrade To The Latest Version of WordPress In 3 Easy Steps

Thanks to new additions added to WordPress 2.7 you can both one click update your plugins as well as your WordPress install itself.

However, to make sure nothing “bad” happens to you, I outlined the exact process that you can use each time a new version of WordPress comes out.

You see, lots of things can go horribly wrong during an upgrade.  Plugins can die, content can get lost, you’re site could hang or become unusable.

There are a few simple precautions you can follow to ensure none of this happens to you, or if it does, what to do about it.

Step 1.) Backup Your WordPress Database.

You want to do this in case something bad happens and you need to revert back to your previous database.  Each upgrade updates the database, so you will need a copy of the previous version  to revert back to 2.7.

I explain this entire process here in this article ->  How To Backup Your WordPress Database

Go ahead and follow that tutorial then come back and follow on with Step 2.

Step 2.) Click Upgrade Automatically

After you complete the backup and download it locally to your desktop, you need to click the little “Upgrade Automatically” button located at the top.

Step 3.) TEST

After the upgrade completes you need to test, make sure your plugins are working, nothing is messing up and you can access posts past your first page.

Conclusion

In this training we went over how to upgrade WordPress to the latest version in 3 easy steps and under 10 minutes.

We did this by backing up a copy of our database, saving a local copy, then clicking the upgrade automatically button and following the steps I outlined in the video.

We then went back and verified that everything on our site is working.  Our content, our navigation, our plugins, and our widgets.

Since we backed up, if we experience a problem we can easily revert back to the previous version and “pretend it never happened!”.
